Philadelphia's Jarron “Boots” Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs) was victorious Saturday night in scoring a sixth round TKO over Eimantas Stanionis (15-1, 9 KOs) of Lithuania in becoming the unified IBF, WBA and Ring Magazine Welterweight champion in headlining on DAZN at the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Ennis was aggressive from the opening bell taking it to Stanionis. The two traded some leather in the fight round an in the sixth and final round, a heavy barrage of body shots led to an uppercut, which scored a knockdown for Boots. The accumulation of punishment from Ennis proved too much for Stanionis, causing his corner to call a halt to the action after the round giving Ennis a TKO victory and the unified Welterweight crown.
“I think I did but I want to go back and watch it. I felt like I was just getting in my groove and starting to get loose and have fun. My dad kept telling me to put the pressure on and that I was going to stop him. It’s crazy because I had a dream that I was going to stop him just like this. It’s unreal but these things happen, and it came true.”
“The biggest part for me tonight was having fun and being myself and having a live body in front of me. When I have that in front of me you see what happens, I put on a show. I showed my speed, power, defense, and a little bit of inside game. I showed you everything and I will keep taking it to the next level.”
Ennis also talked about how he felt as the rounds went on with Stanionis, “I felt him softening up and felt like I could go to the body as much as I wanted to. He was much shorter in the ring, so I had to go to the body and do something different.”
“It was very important to me since I never actually fought for the IBF belt, and I actually got to fight for another title and take it away and beat him. It’s everything I always wanted, and it felt way better than waking up and being the IBF champ.”
Matchroom Chairman, Eddie Hearn, was thrilled about Ennis’ performance. “He’s a wonderful humble man, but I’m not, tear up the pound-for-pound list, this is one of the finest fighters in the sport. Tonight, that was a performance by one of the best fighters in the sport of boxing. He’s by far the best fighter in the division and he’s going to be around for a long time. It’s all coming and you’re witnessing true greatness. Now he will make his way on the pound-for-pound list and he’s the future of the sport of boxing. A great man from the great city of Philadelphia and he carries the city around everywhere he goes.”
