Australia's former world champion Tim Tszyu and Joey Spencer previewed their upcoming showdown during media workouts and the final press conference this week before they square off this Saturday, April 5 (U.S. date and time) headlining PBC Championship Boxing on Prime Video from the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in Newcastle, Australia.
TIM TSZYU
“Every fight you go in feeling good and I’m excited to be back in Australia. It’s good to be home for sure.
“I’ve got an opponent in front of me and I’m 100% ready and focused on what I have to do. Some things happen in boxing and we just have to learn from the mistakes and come back stronger.
“I want to be on the biggest stages. I want to do it for Australia. I have a lot of people behind me and it’s a big responsibility. It’s gonna be massive to be back in Newcastle. Hopefully I can contain myself and stay nice and relaxed.
"How does this fight start? It could start either way, but center of the ring, it begins. And I’ll be there right in the middle to do what I always do and to meet him there.
“I don’t really listen to the interviews, nor do I watch and read stuff in the media. I just get a couple of phone calls from managers, from promoters that let me be aware of the scenario. All I got told was about these judges. That pissed me off. Pissed me off for the fact that whenever we travel—all of us Aussies—we don’t get that luxury. We just get what we get. For them to come with this mentality, it’s diva-like in my eyes.
“I don’t know what Spencer is thinking. We come from different generations and have different mindsets.”
JOEY SPENCER
“I’m not surprised that he wants to go toe-to-toe. When you get this close to fight night, you really just want to go in there and tear somebody up. I’m not thinking about what to make of what he says, because we’re gonna get in there and find out. No matter how he comes out, we’re going to be ready to fight fire with fire.
“I feel great. It’s been a great time in Australia and a great finish to camp. I’m feeling really good and ready.
“Tim is gonna come out hard. It’s an important fight for both of us. It means everything to both of us. We both know that we have to get this win. You only get so many opportunities in boxing, so when you’re in a position like Tim’s in, you know you have to win to get back on track. And if you’re in my position, I want to get to that next level, so I have to win this fight to do that.
“I believe with all my heart that this is my time. Everything has come together for this opportunity, and so I’m just enjoying it. I’m enjoying the moment, I’m enjoying the people here, and it’s just great. I couldn’t be happier, couldn’t be more thankful.
“Just what I know I’ve put in. What I know I’ve got inside me. I feel like my journey has brought me to this point. Like I said, my opponent—he’s a great opponent, he’s done great things, I think he’s extremely dangerous—but at the end of the day, it’s not about him. It’s about me. And I feel like I’ve got what it takes to be at this level and to win this fight.
“I’m not arrogant enough to say that I’m just going to be able to choose what I do in this fight and he’s not going to respond, right? We’re both going to have to respond to each other. I believe this is going to be a competitive fight, and so that means there’s going to be ebbs and flows, adjustments to be made.
“I don’t know if he’s underestimating me or not. I’m not inside his head. He says something different in every interview, so we don’t know what he really feels or thinks. It’s probably good on his part, right? To keep everybody else guessing. But that’s why I’m not focused on him. I don’t need to come in and—we’re going to fight, and we’ll see what happens.”
